Vision Vs. Medical Insurances

Understanding the Difference Between Vision and Medical Insurance

When it comes to eye care, it’s common to wonder whether a visit will be covered by your vision insurance or your medical insurance. While both types of coverage are important, they serve very different purposes.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance is designed to cover routine eye care. This includes:

  • Annual eye exams for glasses or contact lenses
  • Contributions towards the cost of eyeglass frames and lenses
  • Contributions towards contact lens fittings and contact lenses
  • Discounts on elective vision correction procedures

Example:
You come in for a routine eye exam to update your glasses prescription—this would be billed to your vision insurance.

Medical Insurance

Medical insurance covers eye health problems or medical conditions related to your eyes. This includes:

  • Eye infections, dry eye, or sudden vision changes
  • Monitoring or treatment for conditions like diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration
  • Injuries to the eye
  • Medical testing or follow-up visits related to an eye condition

Example:
You wake up with red, painful eyes and blurry vision—this would be considered a medical issue, and your visit would be billed to your medical insurance.
